Hawaii Youth Rugby (HYR) was formed in October 2004 with the mission of increasing participation in rugby through a positive culture based upon honoring the game in a safe and fun environment. The organization has grown substantially and now has teams on the Big Island, Maui and Oahu who play in their own island competitions and come together annually for the Hawaii Youth Rugby Invitational Championship and the Hawaii State Championship events which showcase the growing standard of rugby across the islands and attract teams from the US mainland, Canada and New Zealand.
Since its inception "Creating a rugby o'hana in the spirit of
aloha" has been HYR's motto and it is one which demonstrates our
intent to fuse the best of Hawaii's strong community values with
rugby's tradition of discipline, fair play and sportsmanship. New
players and volunteers are always welcome so get in touch and
become a part of the HYR o'hana.

Kona saw some outstanding talent over the weekend when they hosted the state youth rugby championships. Over 300 players took to the Old Airport rugby fields for a display that attracted hundreds of island residents. The winners were:
| 2010 State Championships | MVP | |
| U19 | Kona Bulls | Kana Silva - Hilo Reign |
| U17 | Kona Bulls | Isaiah Chinen - Kona Bulls |
| U15 | Hilo Reign | Keala Fong - Hilo Reign |
| U13 | Hilo Reign | Hiwa Manning - Kona Bulls |
| U10 | Kona Bulls | Aiden Jurgeneit - Kona Bulls |
While disappointed that more outer island teams could not fund more players to participate in the 2-day event, the participation and enthusiasm was excellent. Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hanneman made a guest appearance and shared his support for Hawaii Youth Rugby having played as a youth in New Zealand. Club coordinator Helen McCormick stated "We had a huge following of supporters over the weekend. The finals on Saturday were exciting and definitely showcased many great talents arising from this relatively new sport in Hawaii. Participation is growing exponentially, and there are numerours college scholarships available for island kids."

USA Rugby and The Hawaii Army National Guard officially announced
the extension of its partnership agreement with the Hawaii Youth
Rugby Association for the 2010 season.
Through the Rugby Kit Campaign, USA Rugby and the Hawaii Army
National Guard have provided field equipment and uniforms to
several qualified Hawaii rugby clubs. This gesture has afforded
much of Hawaii’s youth an opportunity to participate and enjoy the
sport of Rugby. More importantly, it has helped to establish the
solid infrastructure and stability necessary for rugby to continue
to grow throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
The National Guard partnership will build upon the foundation of
rugby in the State of Hawaii, allowing players and coaches to
become better in their sport and in their communities. This program
will continue to create better leaders with the strength of
character and mental toughness that embodies the values of the
Hawaii Army National Guard, USA Rugby, and the Hawaii Youth Rugby
Association.
